"FALL AGAIN": UNA STORIA PREZIOSA -

Darren Hayes ex cantante dei Savage Garden, racconta una storia interessante su come un tempo è stato ispirato dalla canzone "Fall Again", cantata poi da Michael Jackson. La canzone in versione demo è contenuta nel quarto disco del cofanetto "Michael Jackson - The Ultimate Collection" pubblicato nel novembre 2004. La voce di Michael in questa canzone è sensualmente acuta come non mai, un gentile sussurro romantico che ti accarezza dolcemente la pelle, ma dopo aver letto quest'aneddoto, di là dall'emozione che può suscitare, la definirei semplicemente talentuosa.
I fan della mia musica conoscono la canzone Insatiable. E' stata scritta e prodotta in collaborazione con Walter Afanasiev. Ma pochi sanno che ho creato un brano ispirato alla canzone Fall Again, che Walter e Alan Thicke scrissero per Michael nel 1999.
Per i fan di Michael Jackson - Questa è la storia non raccontata del mio quasi incontro con il Re del Pop e di come Michael Jackson mi ha ispirato.
Ecco la storia.
Quando nel 1999 stavo registrando Insatiable contenuta nell'album Savage Garden con Walter nel suo studio a San Francisco, mi fece ascoltare una versione demo della canzone Fall Again, a quel tempo registrata con la voce di Robin Thicke. Walter e Robin avevano deciso di offrire una canzone a Michael per il suo nuovo album Invincible.
Rimasi affascinato e chiaramente immaginavo la voce di Michael su questa traccia. Mentre Walter non era sicuro se Michael sarebbe stato interessato alla canzone, io come suo fan, ebbi la sensazione che Michael Jackson al primo ascolto, l'avrebbe amata proprio com'era successo a me. Mi richiamò subito alla mente le sue piacevoli canzoni classiche come Human Nature. Sapevo che Michael con la sua voce le avrebbe conferito quel tocco "micidiale".
Infatti, a Michael la canzone piacque, e accettò di registrare un suo demo. Accadde solo un piccolo inconveniente: l'unico momento in cui MJ era libero, Walter aveva già concordato con me di registrare le voci del brano Insatiable per l'album Savage Garden.
Tuttavia, Walter decise che avrebbe potuto registrare entrambe le sessioni, per cui volammo a New York. Il mattino registrai con lui nello studio di Sony, e poi nel pomeriggio, andò da Michael Jackson presso The Hit Factory, praticamente dall'altra parte della strada.
Oltre alla prima versione di Fall Again - questa demo è in assoluto l'unica esistente, poiché Michael registrò la canzone solo quella volta. Un semplice tentativo. Lui non ebbe nemmeno il tempo necessario per imparare la canzone correttamente, ma ascolta quanto è incredibile il suo lavoro!
Il giorno della registrazione con Michael, Walter ritornò a lavorare alla mia sessione, due ore più tardi, il suo aspetto era raggiante. Parlò in termini appassionati di Michael, circa la sua voce, la sua cortesia e il suo talento. Ma più di tutto mi toccò quando disse che i bambini di Michael (Prince e Paris) erano in studio, Michael aveva istituito nella sua cabina un monitor TV per vedere i suoi figli giocare con la tata nella stanza accanto, mentre lui cantava. La sessione fu interrotta prematuramente a causa dei bambini che si sentirono male, e Michael, da un buon padre premuroso, voleva dare loro tutta l'attenzione necessaria. Come mi fu raccontato, si scusò e andò via dalla sessione dopo aver completato la prima presa.
Non ho mai sentito la versione cantata di Michael, finché non è stata pubblicata molti anni dopo (anche se Walter sapeva che ero un suo grande fan, ha rispettato la privacy Michael Jackson e non mi ha mai fatto ascoltare la demo). Ma nella mia mente era rimasta impressa quella magica melodia e l'emozione che mi suscitò l'ascolto della canzone, quella prima volta cantata da Robin Thicke. Così quando arrivò anche il mio momento di registrare un album come solista, chiesi a Walter di scrivermi una canzone con quella stessa energia. E così nacque Insatiable.
E' stupefacente sentire la versione demo di Michael dopo tanti anni e ammirare la sua arte. Michael è la ragione per cui sono diventato un artista (da quando vidi il suo Bat tour nel 1987, in quell'istante mi resi conto che per il resto della mia vita, volevo esibirmi). Ascoltando i suoi album, ho imparato a cantare. Sono così orgoglioso del fatto che anni dopo, nella mia carriera e lavoro c'è una sua parte! E anche se non è più con noi, mi piace pensare che quella piccola scintilla d'artista, che accese in me - faccia parte della sua eredità.
Scusate se l'articolo è venuto lungo e sentimentale, ma so che i fan apprezzeranno la storia di MJ. Ho sempre desiderato raccontarla, e oggi finalmente l'ho fatto.
Beh, un divertente epilogo della storia - il momento in cui ho quasi conosciuto Michael:
Durante questi eventi, il presidente della Sony Music era Tommy Mottola. Lui venne in studio nello stesso giorno che Walter stava registrando con Michael, Tommy entrò in studio e mi disse: "Darren, c'è qualcuno di molto speciale che voglio invitare in studio per fartelo conoscere. Va bene, se porto un altro artista solo per un saluto? "
Naturalmente, pensavo che si stesse riferendo a Michael. Chi altri? Michael era dall'altra parte della strada rispetto a noi e lavorava con lo stesso mio produttore!
"Va bene, portalo!" - Dissi.
Tommy lasciò la stanza dicendo che sarebbe tornato subito.
Ho aspettato da solo in studio con un ingegnere ed ero quasi in procinto per bagnarmi i pantaloni.
Tommy bussò alla porta.
Il mio cuore si fermò.
E poi… sprofondai.
Tommy era in compagnia di un alto biondo maschio caucasico, apparentemente sotto i cinquanta anni.
"Ma, non è Michael Jackson! " - pensai tra me.
"Darren, ti presento Daryl" - disse Tommy.
"Ciao!", - risposi con un finto entusiasmo.
Poi Tommy fece ascoltare a quest'uomo Two Beds and a Coffee - una canzone, sulla quale stavamo lavorando in quel giorno.
Daryl si appoggiò allo schienale della sedia e con un tono di voce sincero mi disse: "Sei un cantautore straordinario e mi piace molto la tua voce".
"Grazie" - risposi, ancora deluso dal fatto che non era Michael Jackson.
Quando Tommy e Daryl stavano per andarsene, l'ingegnere si rivolse a me e chiese:
"Tu sai chi era?"
"Non ho idea" - dissi.
"Era Daryl Hall di 'Hall e Oate'".
Ora, credetemi, ero e ancora sono un fan appassionato di 'Hall e Oates'. E mi sono sentito terribilmente in imbarazzo poiché non lo avevo riconosciuto. In mia difesa, devo dire che in quel momento portava la barba, io me lo ricordavo ben rasato, e, naturalmente, molto più giovane.
Così quel giorno sono "morto" per ben due volte.

Fans of my music will be familiar with my song 'Insatiable'. It was co-written and produced with Walter Afanasieff. What many people don't know is that I wrote my song as a reaction to and after having been inspired by a song that Walter and Alan Thicke wrote for Michael back in '99 called 'Fall Again'.

The story goes like this.
When I was recording the Savage Garden album 'Affirmation' with Walter in 1999 at his studio in San Francisco, he played me a demo of the song 'Fall Again' which at that time had Robin Thicke's vocals on it. Walter and Robin had intended to submit the song to M.J for his 'Invincible' album project.
I was completely in awe and all I could hear was Michael.
At the time, Walter told me he wasn't sure if Michael would be interested but as a fan I had a feeling that when M.J heard it he'd respond like I had. It reminded me of the lushness of classic Michael songs like 'Human Nature'.
I knew M.J would kill it.
Sure enough, the song got to Michael and he loved it and agreed to cut a demo of it.
Slight hitch? The only time M.J had available was when Walter was booked in with me to finish the vocals for the Savage Garden album 'Affirmation'.
Walter decided he could record both sessions and so we flew to New York and
I recorded in the mornings with Walter at Sony Studios and he then left in the afternoon to record Michael Jackson at The Hit Factory in the afternoon literally across
the street.
The version in this post is the one and only time Michael ever sang the song. One take. He hadn't even had a chance to learn the song properly (and what an amazing job he did!).
The day he recorded Michael Walter came back to my session at Sony Studios about 2 hours later beaming. He spoke in glowing terms about Michael, about his voice, about his politeness and talent. And what touched me the most was he told me that Michael's children (Prince and Paris) were at the session and M.J had set up a t.v monitor in his recording booth so he could see the children playing with the Nanny in another room while he was singing. The session was cut short because the children were poorly and Michael wanted to be a good Dad and tend to them. He apparently apologised and left the session after only one take.
I never heard Michael's version until it was released many years later (even though Walter knew I was a massive fan he respected M.J's privacy and never played it to me). But I had remembered the feeling and the magic of the song from the first time I heard Robin Thicke's vocal and so when it came time for me to record my first solo album, I asked Walter to try and write a song with the same energy with me. That's how we wrote 'Insatiable'.
It's amazing to hear Michael's demo version of 'Fall Again' so many years later and be in awe of his artistry. Michael is the reason I became a performer (having seen his 'Bad' tour in 1987 and knowing in an instant that performing was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life). Listening to his records taught me how to sing. I'm proud that years later in my own career there are pieces of him in my work. And although he is not with us anymore, I like to think that little spark he ignited in me as an artist is part of his legacy.
Sorry if this was long and sappy - but I know there are M.J fans out there who would appreciate this story. I'd always wanted to tell it. And today I did.
As a funny epilogue to this story - here's the bit where I almost met Michael.
At the time of the recording, Tommy Motolla was president of Sony Music. He came in to the studio the same day Walter was recording M.J and he said to me 'Darren, there's someone very special that I'd like to bring in to the studio to introduce you to. Is it o.k if I bring another artist in here to say hello?" he said.
Of course I thought he meant Michael.
Of course he meant Michael right? Michael was across the street working with the same producer I was with! Bring it on!
Tommy left the room and said he'd be right back.
So I sat there in the studio with the engineer, absolutely about to pee my pants.
Tommy knocks on the door.
My heart stops.
And then it sinks.
In walks Tommy with a very tall later 40's white male with blond hair.
Ie NOT MICHAEL JACKSON.
'Darren this is Darryl' Tommy says.
"Hi' I say with mock enthusiasm.
Tommy proceeds to play this man 'Two Beds and a Coffee' machine, the song that we'd been working on that day.
Darryl sits back in his chair and with the most sincere tone tells me that I'm an incredible song writer and that he loves my voice.
'Thanks!' I say, still devastated this man is not Michael Jackson.
When Tommy and Darryl leave, the engineer turns to me and says
'Do you know who that was?'.
'Nope' I say.
'That was Darryl Hall, of Hall and Oates'.
Now let the record show, I was and remain a MASSIVE fan of Hall and Oates.
And I felt incredibly rude for being oblivious to this fact. In my defence Darryl had a beard at the time and my memory of him was clean shaven and much younger of course.
So I died a little twice that day.
But there you have it.
